Irvine Solar
The city of Irvine, California, has a population of about 210,000 and is located in Orange County in Southern California. It is a planned city that was largely created by the Irvine Company over the last 40 years.
Irvine is home to several large solar installations, along with many residential solar panel systems. Through a partnership with UPC Solar, the University of California at Irvine plans to generate 1.2 megawatts of power from 6500 solar panels on 11 campus buildings. This is enough solar power to supply 200 average homes in Irvine. The City of Irvine offers extensive green information and incentives, including information on green building and energy efficiency.
Irvine residents interested in installing solar panels qualify for a $2200/kW rebate through the California Solar Initiative, administered through their utility, and as of January 1, 2009, will also receive the newly renewed Federal Investment Tax Credit of 30% of their installed solar system cost (federal rebates until then are capped at $2000).
