California Solar Power Information

California is the undisputed solar power leader in the United States. Much of its climate is perfectly suited to take advantage of solar power, the California Solar Initiative is the best state rebate program in the country, California currently produces the most energy from solar electricity of all the states in the U.S., and it continues to dominate the U.S. market in solar installations year over year.

In 2007, solar installations in California accounted for 58% of the U.S. solar market (American Solar Energy Society), through residential solar photovoltaic installations, large-scale photovoltaic installations on stores and warehouses, as well as utility-scale concentrated solar plants. California Governor Schwarzenegger is a strong supporter of solar energy in California and launched the Million Solar Roofs Initiative in 2004.

In addition to California’s statewide initiatives, many California cities and municipalities are also taking steps to advance solar power in their communities. In fact, California has six of the twenty five Solar America Cities selected by the DOE in 2007 and 2008. The pages below provide information about solar power initiatives and advances in many of California’s cities. Enjoy!
